monster squad

The Monster Squad was a project I launched in 2006. The sole purpose was to seek out young and talented telemark skiers from around the world. The previous year I launched Freeheellife.com, a telemark webzine, where people could acquaint themselves with youth telemark culture through videos, articles and photos. A small group of youth, from around the United States, began posting comments regularly in the forum section of the site. Many times touching on the subject of sponsorship, shooting video, etc. Fielding their forum questions was a great experience and helped me see how many other young freeheelers were around the world. At the time I was  also learning how to be a professional athlete myself, and had learned the basics of how to approach sponsorship scenarios with ski companies. I felt I had something to offer other telemark skiers interested in following a similar path to mine and this led me to the initial concept of The Monster Squad.

I held a contest where anyone could send in a promotional video to me for review. In return I would select eight finalists as part of an amateur team. The team received the following: a one year Voile sponsorship for bindings and bc gear, deals on Karhu skis and a mini-segment in the first Lipstick Films telemark movie. A new film company I started with Cody Smith that same year.
