I made it back to Salt Lake City a few days ago. The stop home was needed, more for the fact that there were things to attend to here that I couldn’t do from the road. It can be a tough balance of running a few small businesses and living in a van moving around. I’m working hard to find the groove, but it can be quite the challenge.
This past Friday we all arose early in Missoula, MT and made the long drive back to SLC for a gig at our own High Desert Studios with some new friends in a band called Robbers Roost. I opened things up with an acoustic set and my brother Lorin and his band finished the night out. It was a great night of tunes, friends and drinks.
Here are a couple of photos I took at the event:
Playing acoustic solo shows this Spring and Summer has proved to be very satisfying. I’m always challenged by the idea of standing up solely with my guitar and my voice and feeling like I can make a dent in an audience. It is always a daunting task. It makes me dig deeper into why I write songs and perform and I enjoy that. There’s no bullshit or cover up — you just play.
I’m already starting to think about the winter and have been doing some writing for Telemark Skier Magazine. I’m also going to be opening my own small telemark shop in Salt Lake City called The Freeheel Life on November 1st. This will keep me closer to home for the winter months. I’ll be doing a Riva Rebels record, solo record and plenty more during that time.
